eCommerce & SSL Certificates

eCommerce is a misused term often when using the Internet. Therefore we have put a few more items under our eCommerce button, eCommerce (electronic commerce) is the buying and selling of goods and services on the Internet, the World Wide Web. In practice, the term eCommerce is used and a newer term, e-business, are often used interchangably.

eCommerce can be divided into:

  • E-tailing or "virtual storefronts" on Web sites with online catalogs, sometimes gathered into a "virtual mall"
  • The gathering and use of demographic data through Web contacts
  • Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), the business-to-business exchange of data
  • E-mail and fax and their use as media for reaching prospects and established customers (for example, with newsletters)
  • Business-to-business buying and selling
  • The security of business transactions

What is SSL?
SSL is an acronym for Secure Sockets Layer, an encryption technology that was created by Netscape. Millions of online businesses use SSL certificates to secure their websites and allow their customers to place trust in them. In order to use the SSL protocol, a web server requires the use of an SSL certificate. SSL certificates are provided by Certificate Authorities (CAs).

SSL creates an encrypted connection between your web server and your visitors' web browser allowing for private information to be transmitted without the problems of eavesdropping, data tampering, or message forgery.

To enable an SSL on a website, we will need to install an SSL Certificate that identifies you onyour or our server depending on the location of the website. The use of an SSL certificate on a website is indicated by an "HTTPS" preceding your web address and is sometimes noted by a padlock icon in your web browser but can also be indicated by a green address bar. Once you the SSL is properly installed, you can access the site securely by changing the URL from http:// to https://. When an SSL certificate is installed on a website, you can be sure that the information you enter (contact or credit card information), is secure and only seen by the organization that owns the website.

Why do I need SSL?
If you are transmitting sensitive information on a web site, such as credit card numbers or personal information, you need to secure it with SSL encryption. It is possible for every piece of data to be seen by others unless it is secured by an SSL certificate.

Your customers won't trust your web site without an SSL certificate. According to Gartner Research, nearly 70 percent of online shoppers have terminated an online order because they did not "trust" the transaction. In those cases, 64 percent indicated that the presence of a trust mark would have likely prevented the termination. An SSL certificate and a site seal could stop people from abandoning your website and that means more money for you. Read our why SSL is necessary page to learn more.

SSL Certificates

Coey Tech provides Security certificates with our hosting packets and by themselves. Security Certificates are used to keep incoming information secure and safe from preditors. This is also referred to as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): How It Works

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology protects your website and makes it safe and easy for your website visitors to trust you in three essential ways:

1. An SSL Certificate enables encryption of sensitive information during online transactions.
2. Each SSL Certificate contains unique, authenticated information about the certificate owner.
3. A Certificate Authority verifies the identity of the certificate owner when it is issued.

You need an SSL Certificate (Security Certificate) if:

  • you have an online store or accept online orders and credit cards
  • you offer a login or sign in on your site
  • you process sensitive data such as address, birth date, license, or ID numbers
  • you need to comply with privacy and security requirements
  • you value privacy and expect others to trust you.

How Encryption Works

Imagine sending mail through the postal system in a clear envelope. Anyone with access to it can see the data. If it looks valuable, they might take it or change it. An SSL Certificate establishes a private communication channel enabling encryption of the data during transmission. Encryption scrambles the data, essentially creating a secure non-breachable envelope for privacy in your messages, like a security envelope.

Each SSL Certificate consists of a public key and a private key. The public key is used to encrypt information and the private key is used to decipher it. When a Web browser points to a secured domain, a Secure Sockets Layer handshake authenticates the server (website) and the client (Web browser). An encryption method is established with a unique session key and secure transmission can begin. True 128-bit SSL Certificates enable every site visitor to experience the strongest SSL encryption available to them.

How Authentication Works

Imagine receiving an envelope with no return address and a form asking for your bank account number. Every SSL Certificate is created for a particular server in a specific domain for a verified business entity. When the SSL handshake occurs, the browser requires authentication information from the server. By clicking the closed padlock in the browser window or certain SSL trust marks or seals, the website visitor sees the authenticated organization name. In high-security browsers, the authenticated organization name is prominently displayed and the address bar turns green when an Extended Validation SSL Certificate is detected. If the information does not match or the certificate has expired, the browser displays an error message or warning.

Ways to Increase Margins
Secure Your Site and Protect Your Brand

Security isn't just about technology, it's also about brand. Before customers log in or give you their account information, they want assurance that you can be trusted. Make your business more competitive and increase profit margins with these five helpful security tips.

1. Enable encryption on your site with an SSL Certificate.

If customers log in or make purchases on your site, you need SSL encryption. Before entering sensitive data, website visitors look for proof of organizational identity and encryption. How much does your company lose every time a customer who is ready to buy abandons a transaction due to lack of security indicators?

2. Display the Secured Seal and keep customers on the buy path.

Many customers need more than the closed padlock that appears with every SSL connection. Over half of Internet users today avoid buying online because they are afraid their financial information might be stolen, and 49% of those who express concern about their information security do not make online purchases at all. More than any other mark, 91% of U.S. online shoppers are familiar with a secured seal.

3. Drive more traffic with a premium brand SSL Certificate.

High profile incidents of fraud and phishing have made Internet users very concerned about identity theft. They are looking for ways to determine the authenticity of the sites they visit. The premium brand SSL requires more authentication form you and shows a gold seal for more assurances to the user.

4. Renew early to reduce the risk of downtime.

At Coey Tech, we make it easy to keep track of your SSL Certificates and reduce the risk of downtime due to expired certificates. We make sure we notify you plenty of time in advance to renew to avoid having to reset up your certificate, authenticating can take a few days.

5. Be a leader when it comes to security.

If your site turns the address bar green in high security browsers and your competitor's site does not, you appear to be more trusted and more legitimate. That's a competitive advantage in the world of e-commerce.
